¡Welcome to another article of Aventouralia! Today we are going to talk about quads for kids. What age can you ride a quad?
When you think in quads for kids, both aspects (power and size) are fundamental because the vehicle must suit their age, height, and weight. An excess of power or inappropriate morphology can hinder driving or cause the child to lose control of the ATV.
Obviously, children cannot drive conventional ATVs because it requires a driver’s license obtained at 16 or 18 years old. However, there is a wide variety of models for children available in the market, popularly known as “mini quads.”
Mini quads can be ridden from 4 to 14 years old. Models for younger children have speed limiters and safety stops, while those designed for pre-adolescents are faster, although adult supervision during their use is recommended.

Are the quads safe for kids?
Quads for kids are trendy. One of the main reasons is that parents who are ATV enthusiasts want to share their hobby with their children. In fact, there are even special family-friendly routes.
Another issue is whether these types of vehicles seem more or less safe to us, causing certain reservations. Quads for kids are quite reliable and easy to handle. Additionally, they usually incorporate devices that facilitate learning and provide security for parents. Some of these devices include:
- Safety stop: This device automatically stops the engine when the child gets off the seat. It operates using an extendable cable attached to the child’s clothing on one end and a small cap on the ATV’s handlebar on the other. Some children’s ATVs also have safety stop buttons at the rear.
- Speed limiter: Positioned on the right side of the handlebar, it controls the maximum speed of the ATV.
- Chain cover: This plate completely covers the chain area to prevent any rubbing or entanglement.
- Exhaust pipe outlet: To avoid issues with gasoline mini quads (not those running on battery power), the exhaust pipe outlet is hidden under the seat.
- Otherwise, the operation of children’s ATVs is similar to electric cars for kids, although they offer some advantages over children’s motorcycles, being more stable and requiring less skill for safe driving.
And as these vehicles cannot be driven on public roads, remember that to use them, you will have to find accessible and spacious areas where young riders don’t pose a danger of collision or accidents.
Finally, for safe ATV riding, children should wear: approved helmet, motorcycle gloves, pants, jackets and shirts with protective gear and special socks, knee and elbow pads and goggles and vests can also be added for extra protection.
Tips for buying a quad for kids
The age for driving a quads for kids is somewhat relative. In fact, more than age, it’s important to consider the child’s height and build.
To ensure safety, pay attention to the seat-to-ground distance, ensuring comfortable driving. Regarding weight, most children’s ATVs support up to 80 kg (depending on their power), although for safety reasons, it’s advisable not to load them with more than 60 kg.
Typically, the standard height of children’s ATVs is around 90 centimeters, and their width is approximately 60 centimeters.
Another important factor before choosing a quads for kids is its power. Similar to when buying a motorcycle or a car, considering the functionality and the driver’s skills, with ATVs, the same applies: for young children, electric ATVs with less power are ideal. If the child has experience with go-karts or similar vehicles on asphalt or circuits, a 110 cc or 125 cc model can be chosen, resembling a miniature adult ATV, offering more performance and speed. If the child is not familiar with this type of vehicle, it’s best to start with a 50 cc mini quad.
